Pattie Johnson, Director of TRI's Technology and Information Management Services (TIMS) presented at the 2015 Special Education Conference: Building Collaborative Frameworks for All. This two-day conference, hosted by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) and the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), took place on October 1st and 2nd at the Eugene Hilton Hotel, in downtown Eugene, Oregon.
Oregon is engaged in fast-paced and far reaching efforts
to improve school engagement and secondary transition programs/services
throughout the state.
Ms. Johnson's presentation, "Incorporating Evidence-Based Practice and Predictors into Transition Services," explored how school districts can use a data-based decision making tool to examine their secondary transition indicator data for graduation rates, dropout rates, IEP compliance, and post-school outcomes. She was join by Mitch Kruska, Director, Office of Learning - Student Services; and Charlotte Alverson, National Post School Outcome Center.
STEPSS
A second presentation that afternoon went more deeply into the STEPSS decision-making tool. STEPSS provides
a structured process for a stakeholder group to review data, assess
their progress toward meeting district targets, assess implementation of
predictors of post-school success, and develop an action plan based on
implementation of the predictors. Participants left the session
with an understanding of the STEPSS process and what they need to do in
order to use STEPSS in their district.
TIMS in unique position
TRI, TIMS, and Pattie Johnson are in a unique position to discuss this important topic, having had the ODE Data Services contract for over 25 years, tracking Post-Secondary Outcomes for ODE since 2004, and managing the Transition Community Network website and resources - providing a "one-stop shop" for resources related to transitioning youth with disabilities to adulthood in Oregon.
The TRI information table
Throughout the two day conference, many people stopped by the TRI information table to find out about the services we have to offer. Many were interested in learning about the data services through TIMS, and about the individualized student evaluations that are available through our Education Evaluation Center.
