Understanding the needs of underrepresented students in a blended program

Participants will gain information and implement strategies to assess the knowledge and skills of underrepresented students entering a blended Early Childhood Education/Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education program. The information presented was gathered through the use of a student needs survey that is currently being used in several states, and designed as part of a personnel preparation grant. This survey is used to gain information on knowledge and skills about inclusion prior to coursework. That information is applied to the use of a curriculum review that includes linking course content with activities and outcomes that based on student need as well as curriculum. In addition, participants will analyze syllabi that align content, activities and outcomes with both NAEYC and Division for Early Childhood (DEC/CEC) and national teaching standards. Participants will evaluate a cohort model that emphasizes front loading by faculty and peer to peer support for first generation college students.

Objectives:
1. Participants will learn about data collected from a student needs survey to address student knowledge and skills about inclusion at the beginning of the program.
2. Participants will learn to use a curriculum review to ensure that syllabi meet criteria for inclusion.
3. Participants will learn the importance of creating a community of learners who are there for each other as they move through a cohort model.

Presenters:
Patricia M Blasco and Cindy Ryan are Co-PI's of Project PIECE: Promoting Inclusion in Early Childhood Educators which is a federally funded OSEP project. This project supports a blended program in ECE/EI/ECSE for students from underrepresented groups. The project is a collaboration between The Research Institute and the College of Education, both at Western Oregon University. Drs. Blasco and Ryan have presented their work at both NAEYC and the Division for Early Childhood(DEC). Dr. Serra Acar recently joined the Teaching Research Institute faculty and she is the evaluator on Project PIECE. She will share the results of the student needs survey with the participants.
