TRI's Patricia Blasco and Serra Acar Present at OSEP 2016 Project Directors' Conference

TRI's Patricia Blasco and Serra Acar have been invited to present at the OSEP 2016 Project Directors' Conference, August 1-3, 2016 in Washington, DC.

Patricia Blasco, Ph.D. will present a poster on Project PIECE: Promoting Inclusion in Early Childhood Educators.

The subject of the poster will be Mentoring Underrepresented Early Childhood Scholars: Navigating the Maze of Higher Education.

Project PIECE provides training and financial support for early childhood educators to obtain a bachelor's degree with a teaching authorization in early childhood and an endorsement in early intervention/early childhood special education at the graduate level. The overall outcome was to recruit, retain and graduate scholars from underrepresented backgrounds from urban and rural areas of Oregon to complete who complete the blended ECE/EI/ECSE program. There are currently 33 scholars in the program.


Creating a Path to Prepare EC Educators for Inclusion

TRI's Patricia Blasco and Serra Acar, Ph.D. will be joined by Ritu V. Chopra, Ph.D., Executive Director, University of Colorado, Denver on a presentation titled Creating a Path to Prepare EC Educators for Inclusion.





The work of university and community college partnerships in Colorado and Oregon to improve the knowledge/skills of early childhood educators and implementation of inclusive and recommended practices will be highlighted. Using a tiered approach to collaborative support for each community college, presenters will describe how they enhanced or developed early childhood coursework on inclusion. Products developed under these projects will be shared including the DEC Recommended Practices checklist, field-placement checklist and survey of graduates to track employment and continued scholarship in education. Course-specific Bank of Resources (BoRs) booklets with recommended syllabus, readings, assignments and video clips will be presented.

OSEP is the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs. The Project Directors’ Conference supports OSEP’s goal of improving results for infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities, and their families. The conference provides a forum for leadership to share important information with grantees to better their work, as well as a space for interaction among grantees to discuss current topics, goals, and strategies.
