Improving the outcomes of students in Oregon's 21st CCLC programs

The Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Program at Meadows Elementary serves 93 students ages 6 to 12. This Portland program partners with Active Children (AC) Portland to offer quality soccer and poetry programming for 15 students in grades 4-6. Students in this class receive one hour of organized soccer practice and played in 6 weekend games this past Fall.

teacher and student In addition to daily physical activity, students  also receive an hour of poetry and creative writing. During this time, there is a structured curriculum where the kids learn about different types of poetry, have a chance to express themselves through creative outlets, and have a chance to read culturally relevant poems by a variety of poets.
