TRI Staff Presents at the ORATE Annual Conference
Feb 26, 2016
TRI's Christina Reagle and Mary Ellen Dello Stritto, joined by ODE's Tanya Frisendahl, will present at the annual conference of the Oregon Association of Teacher Educators (ORATE).
This year's conference theme is Meaningful Change
Session Title: How can evaluation of the Oregon Mentoring Program support pre-service programs?
Beginning teachers involved in the Oregon Mentoring Program participate in surveys about the effectiveness of their teacher preparation and the mentoring program. The results of the surveys can be supportive to improving both programs.
The Oregon Mentoring Program has data to support that Oregon does a good job at growing its own educators. Many of the beginning teachers hired by school districts each year are from Oregon universities. Each year beginning teachers involved in the Oregon Mentoring Program complete surveys to collect information about the effectiveness of the mentoring program, which includes a few questions about teacher preparation.
The goal of the survey is to determine what is going well and what needs further attention to improve the Oregon Mentoring Program. Since the mentoring surveys began in 2008, beginning teachers have consistently been asked two questions about their teacher preparation: a) in what state did you complete your teacher preparation and b) at what university did you complete your education program?
In the spring of 2014 two questions were added to the Oregon Mentoring Program beginning teachers survey: How well do you think your teacher education program prepared you for the classroom? How well do you think your teacher preparation program prepared you for the following (15 items relating to instructional practice)? The purpose of these questions was to provide feedback to teacher preparation programs as a component of a continuous improvement loop. A second reason for gathering this information was to support conversations among universities, school districts and state government about effective educators in Oregon.
This session will provide results from these questions and facilitate a conversation about using this information at the school district, university and state level to improve educator preparation and effectiveness.
The Heady Highs and Downward Dives: Resisting Derailment in a Clinical Practice Partnership
Dr. Reagle will also be participating The Heady Highs and Downward Dives: Resisting Derailment in a Clinical Practice Partnership.
Describing a clinical practice partnership that integrated co-teaching, contextualized English Language Development, and service learning, the presenters share resources, data collection tools, and a critical evaluation of the partnership.
