Developing Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leaders in Oregon

Developing Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leaders in Oregon

The Research Institute (TRI) at Western Oregon University (WOU) has been awarded a $1 million grant by the Oregon Department of Education. Project DEMILO (Developing Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leaders in Oregon) is a collaboration between WOU, the Willamette Education Service District, and the Oregon Coast STEM Hub designed to recruit, support, and prepare 60 K-8 teachers, over a 3-year period, to earn the TSPC Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leader Specialization.

Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leaders (EMIL) are teachers, teacher leaders or coaches who are responsible for supporting effective mathematics instruction and student learning in the classroom, school, district and/or state levels. Their specific roles will vary depending upon their school district, but all EMILs will act as a resource and provide leadership to their colleagues - a critical and timely role as the state fully implements the new Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.

The DEMILO grant will provide scholarships for participants to complete WOU’s TSPC-approved Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leader program. Participants will also engage in many professional development opportunities to enrich their experience and expand leadership and real-world content knowledge. Graduates of the program will be well equipped to lead the way for their colleagues as they face the challenges presented by new standards and curriculum, diverse populations of students and emerging resources and technologies.
